💰Anthropic IPO Could Make Amazon Nearly $98 Billion Richer Overnight

Your cloud vendors just became Anthropic's biggest shareholders

TL;DR

Anthropic's coming IPO at a $965 billion valuation will make Amazon and Google the biggest financial winners, not the VC firms. Amazon's convertible notes are marked at $97.9 billion. For devs, it signals how deeply Claude is tied to AWS and Google Cloud.

Most of the money from Anthropic's IPO won't go to the venture firms you've heard of. Amazon is likely the single largest beneficiary, and Google isn't far behind. Sequoia, Menlo Ventures, Spark Capital and Sound Ventures will see billions, but none of them owns 5%, which is why they don't show up in the principal stockholders' table. Why should you care? Because Anthropic's money is tangled up with the clouds you probably already pay for. Anthropic has committed to spend at least $110 billion on AWS over 10 years, and Google has locked in at least $114 billion in cloud commitments through 2033. If you're building on Claude through Bedrock or Vertex, your vendor now has a direct financial stake in Anthropic's success. The numbers are wild. At a $965 billion private valuation, a 1% stake is worth nearly $10 billion. Amazon holds convertible notes with $6.2 billion in principal, valued at $97.9 billion as of June 30. Those notes could convert into as many as 1.84 billion shares, capped at 12% of the partially diluted count unless Amazon waives it. Watch the cap. Amazon can waive it, and that's the variable that decides how much of the upside lands on the AWS side of the table.
