🏫Google Makes AI Opt-In by Default for K-12 Schools Starting Coming Months

Your school's search bar is about to become a choice

TL;DR

Google will switch Gemini, Gemini in Classroom, Gemini Notebook, and Google Search to off by default for K-12 schools, with admins manually enabling them. Blocking AI also blocks search, so most schools will likely end up turning it on.

Google is turning AI off by default in K-12 classrooms, and admins have to switch it back on. The rollout hits Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search, and it lands in the coming months. If you build edtech or support school IT, this changes your setup work. There's no picking and choosing here. Schools either allow all of the AI or none of it, and turning AI off also turns off Google Search for students. Students who get blocked will see a message from their school instead of results. Google is betting schools won't give up search, so the default will likely get flipped on. Google's Search is now AI search, with an AI Overview at the top and a conversational AI Mode chatbot. Google is also splitting AI in search into a standard Gemini-based version and a Guided Learning version that offers one-on-one tutoring without handing over full answers. Google admits all its generative AI products can make mistakes. Hot take: Guided Learning may not be enough to ease teacher concerns. Schools that want a clean break can switch to DuckDuckGo, which lets you disable AI features outright.
