🔥Nest Dumps First Two Generations of Thermostats
Your 'smart' Nest Thermostat is now dumb
TL;DR
Google officially ended support for the first two generations of Nest Learning Thermostats, turning them into 'dumb' devices. No more remote control or cloud features, just basic heating and cooling.
Google has cut off support for the original and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats, effectively turning them into basic thermostats. These models, released in 2011 and 2012, respectively, lost all cloud-connected features as of October 25, 2025. Users can no longer control them remotely or use Google Assistant for commands. The core issue? These devices rely on Google's cloud services, which have now been discontinued. If you're still using one of these models, you're left with basic heating and cooling control, no smart features. This move highlights the finite lifespan of 'smart' home devices.
Key Points
Google officially ended support for the original and second-gen Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025.
These models, released in 2011 and 2012, lost all cloud-connected features, including remote control and Google Assistant integration.
Users can no longer check status, change settings, or receive notifications from their Nest app or Google Assistant.
Features like Home/Away Assist, multi-device Eco Mode, and emergency shut off are no longer functional.
Google provided affected users with discount credits to upgrade to newer, supported Nest models.
Why It Matters
If you're still using a first or second-gen Nest Learning Thermostat, your 'smart' device is now a basic thermostat. No more remote control or cloud features. Upgrading to a newer model is necessary to regain smart functionality.
