📦AWS Open-Sources File Mover Express for Moving Terabytes to S3 at Wire Speed

Your media team's S3 uploads just got a free upgrade

TL;DR

AWS released File Mover Express, an open-source app for moving large files to and from S3 on macOS, Windows, and Linux. It uses parallel multipart uploads and a daemon that keeps transfers alive after you close your desktop. If your team shuttles terabytes of media, you can stop paying for clunky commercial clients.

AWS just open-sourced File Mover Express, a desktop app built to move large files between local storage and Amazon S3 at what the team calls wire speed. It runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, and it's free to use. If your team moves terabytes of video or asset files, this is the one to look at. Traditional clients often die when the desktop session ends, and commercial tools bring licensing fees, proprietary protocols, or extra infrastructure. File Mover Express runs its transfer engine as a daemon on a workstation, a server, or an EC2 instance, so the job keeps going after you log off. The transfer engine is written in Go, with a TypeScript and Angular interface. Large files get split into chunks and uploaded in parallel through multipart uploads, with automatic tuning, configurable retries, and file-level pause and resume. Checksums run in the background and get cached, and you can pick MD5, XXHash, XXHash64, or XXH3. Encryption covers files in flight, at rest, and on the control plane, all over HTTPS, with IAM governing bucket access and OIDC single sign-on for centralized identity. S3 Transfer Acceleration and bandwidth limits are both built in.
