🧪devvm Gives Every Project Its Own Sandboxed VM, Free and Open Source

Your coding agent can finally run without touching your laptop

TL;DR

devvm is a free, open-source tool that spins up an isolated VM for every project with its own toolchain. Agents run inside the sandbox, the network sits behind an allowlist proxy, and your API token never enters the VM. Useful if you let AI agents write code on your machine.

Want an AI agent to write code without giving it the keys to your laptop? devvm is a free, open-source tool that creates a separate VM for every project, with the project's toolchain already set up. The agent runs inside that VM, so if something goes wrong, the damage stays in the sandbox. If you already use Claude Code or similar agents, this is the part that matters. The agent gets your settings, skills, and MCP servers, but never your shell history. Your API token stays on the host, the VM only sees a placeholder, and the proxy adds the real token on the way out. Commits made inside the VM are authored with your git name and email, so review still works the way you expect. The setup is fast because of shared caching. The first VM builds a base image, and every later VM is a copy that starts in seconds. Node, Python, Go, Rust, and Claude are shared read-only across VMs, and new VMs default to an allowlist network tier. Dev servers on port 5173 show up at localhost:5173, and devvm code opens the VM in VS Code over Remote-SSH.

Key Points

1

New VMs default to the allowlist network tier, so they can reach only a specific list of hosts rather than the open internet.
