Google's new kit for coding agents is here, and it's free
TL;DR
Google's Data Agent Kit, a free, open-source tool for coding agents, is now generally available with 37 skills. It integrates with Google Data Cloud services and enforces governance.
Google's Data Agent Kit is now generally available, offering a free, open-source solution for coding agents that integrates with over fifteen Google Data Cloud services. This kit, which installs into coding agents Google doesn't own, includes 37 skills under Apache 2.0, each carrying best-practice guidance. Developers should care because it adds a layer of governance and security, preventing accidental data loss and enforcing user consent for irreversible actions. The kit's version 1.1.0 was cut on October 13, and it's pre-installed in Cloud Shell and Cloud Workstations.
Key Points
Google's Data Agent Kit is generally available with 37 skills under Apache 2.0, each named by Google.
The kit ships two kinds of control: skills with best-practice guidance and MCP servers exposing live schema and tools.
The kit's guardrail advises agents to obtain explicit user consent before making irreversible changes, like DROP TABLE or TRUNCATE.
The kit's second control uses an IAM deny policy to block MCP tools where tool.isReadOnly is false, applying at org, folder, or project level.
The kit's documentation mentions containment at both the access layer and data layer, ensuring governance and security.
Why It Matters
If you're using coding agents with Google Data Cloud services, the Data Agent Kit's 37 skills and governance features can enhance security and prevent accidental data loss. The kit's guardrail ensures explicit user consent for irreversible actions, and its IAM deny policy blocks non-read-only tools, adding a layer of protection.
