🧑‍💻HR Leaders Say 92% of Staff Could Be Reskilled for AI Roles

Your next AI hire might already work for you

TL;DR

A May 2026 survey of 595 HR pros and 547 people managers found 92% think their staff could be reskilled for AI roles. Yet 51% are still hiring externally. External hires cost three to five times more and take up to 20 days longer to fill.

Most companies are hiring their way into AI when they could be training their way there. A May 2026 survey found 92% of HR professionals and 88% of people managers think their own employees could be reskilled for AI-related roles. Still, 51% of HR pros say they're hiring externally for those jobs. If you're on an engineering team, this is your problem too. Every time a company backfills an ML or platform role from outside, it pays a premium and waits longer for someone who has to learn the internal systems anyway. Your best bet for a new teammate might be the analyst who already knows the data pipeline. The numbers are blunt. External hiring costs three to five times more than filling comparable roles internally, and can take up to 20 days longer. Redeployment and external hiring are nearly even at 42% and 51%, but tech and telecom hire externally 15% more often. The catch? 43% of HR pros cite limited visibility into individual skill sets as a barrier, so nobody knows who's actually ready.
