📚Readwise Launches Readwise Books, Taking Aim at Goodreads and Kindle

Your reading app just got a Goodreads competitor

TL;DR

Readwise launched Readwise Books, a free e-book store app with millions of titles from the Big Five and reading stats that track your sessions. It is in beta by invite only, and it works with Kindle's Cloud Reader and any DRM-free EPUB. If you read on Kindle and want metrics, this is worth trying.

Readwise just shipped Readwise Books, an e-book store app built to take on Goodreads. The company sells no e-readers. Instead, it bets that a reading community and detailed stats can win people over on their own. If you already track highlights or read a lot, this is the part to care about. The app tracks reading sessions even when you read through Kindle's browser-based Cloud Reader, and you can upload any DRM-free EPUB. It also reads books aloud with text-to-speech, and it exposes a public API and an MCP server, which means you can pipe your reading data into your own tools. The catalog has millions of e-books from the Big Five and other publishers, launching in the U.S. first. Print books and some audiobooks are also in the mix. Amazon's Kindle store holds about 83% of the market, so Readwise is aiming for the smaller crowd that wants better tracking. The app stays free, but some AI features will move behind a paywall later. Right now it is beta and requires an invite unless you already pay for Readwise. Its older apps cost $7.99 per month each or $9.99 for both.
