📡SpaceX Eyes Boost Mobile From EchoStar for $17B Spectrum Play

Your phone might soon fall back to Starlink

TL;DR

SpaceX is reportedly looking to buy Boost Mobile from EchoStar, adding about 7.5 million subscribers and a path to terrestrial cell coverage. The real prize is access to leased towers, which would let Starlink hand off devices to cell networks when satellites can't reach them.

SpaceX wants to buy Boost Mobile from EchoStar, and the subscribers are the smaller half of the story. The towers are the prize. Boost doesn't own any towers. It leases capacity from AT&T and T-Mobile, and those leases are usually nontransferable, which makes this deal messier than it looks. If you build mobile apps, IoT products, or anything that depends on connectivity, this is a signal worth tracking. SpaceX has already spent $17 billion on wireless spectrum from EchoStar to push Starlink indoors. Pair that with cell-tower fallback and you get a hybrid network: satellites outdoors, towers when the sky is blocked. Fewer dead zones for your users, and a new carrier with real incentives to be cheap. The numbers: EchoStar has roughly 7.5 million customers across Boost Mobile and GenMobile. That would put SpaceX in fourth place among U.S. wireless providers, behind AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, each of which has over 100 million subscribers. SpaceX already rolled out satellite access to T-Mobile subscribers in 2024. Boost covers most of the 48 contiguous states. Watch the lease question. If AT&T and T-Mobile won't transfer those tower agreements, the deal's core value gets a lot smaller.
