🥾Three Hikers Stranded on Mount Shasta After Gemini Chatbot Trip Planning Goes Wrong

Your AI trip planner can get you rescued

TL;DR

Three hikers on Mount Shasta called for help after bad planning, partly guided by Google's Gemini chatbot. Rescuers say AI advice is becoming a new way for people to get into trouble. Verify routes with real sources before you head out.

Three hikers on Mount Shasta in Northern California needed rescue after their AI-assisted plan fell apart. They summited at 7:30 pm, had to descend in the dark, got lost on a gnarly section, and one of them banged up his knee by morning. Part of the blame, according to the rescuers, traces back to Google's Gemini chatbot. If you plan routes, this is your cautionary tale. Chatbots sound authoritative even when they're wrong, and they tend to tell you what you want to hear. Search and rescue veterans say AI is just the latest tool that gives people new ways to get in over their heads. Other cases follow the same pattern: a man at a trailhead carried an AI map with peaks on the wrong side of a mountain, and a visitor camped near a No Camping sign because AI said she could. The numbers are worth a look. Grand Teton National Park says visitors using AI for travel information went from zero to 26 percent, and the superintendent says that curve is not going to flatten. The Mount Shasta center averages about a dozen rescues a year and has already logged 312 calls in 2026. Meanwhile, a 16-year-old was rescued from a ledge in British Columbia's Widowmaker Arete after planning with Anthropic's Claude. The catch: the rescue teams don't yet know how much bad robot advice is changing outcomes. Expect more of these stories as AI tools get baked into maps and apps.
